Crackling from the panel is arcing. Main off if you can do it safely, then call now.
Three causes cover almost every call we get for this.
Zinsco panels especially: aluminum bus bars corrode and the breakers arc against them.
A neutral or main lug that has backed off. Arcs under every change in load.
A roof or mast leak drips into the panel. Corrosion, then arcing.
Leave it alone and call. A technician reaches out within 1 business hour, and real emergencies go first.

Crackling, sizzling or popping sounds from the electrical panel are arcing — current jumping a gap at a loose breaker terminal, a corroded bus bar, a loose neutral or a failing main breaker. Arcing at the panel generates intense heat at the point in the house that carries the most current. Turn off the main breaker if you can reach it safely, do not open the panel cover, and call now; if there is smoke, leave and call 911.
If you can reach it safely without touching anything hot or wet, yes. If the panel is smoking, leave the house and call 911.
