Kitchen, bath, garage, laundry, outdoors. The outlet that trips before you get hurt — installed, replaced, or finally made to reset.
A GFCI outlet cuts power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, which is what protects you from a shock at a sink, in a garage or outside. Washington requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, outdoors and within 6 feet of any sink. Replacing an old outlet with a GFCI in the existing box takes about 30 minutes; one GFCI can protect every outlet downstream of it on the same circuit.

Dedicated GFCI protection
The GFCI is fine; a breaker or an upstream outlet has lost power. It cannot reset without power to its line side.
Wired backwards by a previous installer. The device trips or never resets. Ten-minute fix once found.
Water in an outdoor box, a failing freezer or a damaged cord trips it correctly. We find the leak instead of bypassing the protection.
GFCIs wear out after roughly 10 to 15 years. Models made since 2015 self-test and lock out when they fail — a dead one is a replace, not a reset.
An aging compressor leaks a little current. The fix is a dedicated circuit, not removing the GFCI.
Where several outlets or a hot tub need protection, a GFCI breaker at the panel protects the whole circuit from one place.
The device is a few dollars more than a standard outlet; the labor is the same.
| Replace an existing outlet with a GFCI | $150–$300 |
| GFCI in a new location | $250–$450 |
| GFCI breaker at the panel | $250–$450 |
| Find why a GFCI keeps tripping | $150–$350 |
| Outdoor GFCI with in-use cover | $250–$450 |
| Several GFCIs, same visit | Lower per device |

Yes, if they are wired through its load terminals. One correctly placed GFCI at the first outlet on a circuit protects everything after it. That is also why a dead outlet in a bathroom is often fixed by pressing reset in a different bathroom or the garage.
An outlet is cheaper and resets where you are. A breaker protects the whole circuit including the wiring, and is the right answer for hot tubs, outdoor circuits with several outlets, and anywhere the outlets are hard to reach. We will tell you which fits the circuit.
Press TEST once a month; the outlet should click off and RESET should bring it back. Self-test models do this on their own and show a light when they have failed.
Water is getting into an outdoor box or a cord connection. The GFCI is doing its job. We replace the cover with an in-use (bubble) cover, reseal the box, and check the circuit.
Replacing an existing outlet with a GFCI does not need a permit. Adding a GFCI in a new location on a new or extended circuit does, and we include it.
Book online or call. Most GFCI jobs take under an hour.
