One device at the panel that clamps the spikes before they reach your heat pump, EV charger, induction range and everything with a circuit board.
A whole-house surge protector is a Type 2 surge protective device mounted at or next to your electrical panel. It diverts voltage spikes from the utility grid, storms and your own large motors to ground before they reach your appliances. Washington has required one on every new or replaced panel since the 2020 edition of the electrical code; on an existing panel a licensed electrician adds one on a dedicated two-pole breaker in about an hour.

A classic surge casualty
Most surges are small and come from the grid itself dozens of times a day. They wear electronics down rather than killing them at once.
Nearby lightning and lines knocked together in wind send the big spikes. A direct strike is beyond any device; a nearby one is exactly what this stops.
A heat pump compressor or well pump cycling off sends a spike back through the house. Internal surges are the most common kind.
The restore moment is a surge. Appliances that died "in the outage" usually died when the power returned.
Not a surge but it looks like one — voltage swings room to room. If lights brighten and dim on their own, that is a repair call first.
Replacing a panel without a surge device is no longer code-compliant. We include one on every panel we install.
The price covers the device, a dedicated two-pole breaker and installation. The device has a status light; when it has absorbed a large surge it shows that it needs replacing.

Against a strike nearby, on the lines or a transformer — yes, that is what it is for. Against a direct strike on the house, no device can. Layer it with point-of-use strips at the TV and computer for the small spikes that get past the panel.
A status light on the device stays green while it is protecting. After a large surge the indicator changes; the house still has power, but the protection has been used up and the device should be replaced.
On any new panel or panel replacement in Washington, yes, since the 2020 code cycle. Adding one to an existing panel is optional and, in our view, the cheapest insurance you can buy for a heat pump or EV charger.
Two spaces for the dedicated breaker it should be on. If your panel is full, we can use a tandem breaker where the panel allows it, or mount a protector designed to share the main lugs.
The opposite. Several heat pump and EV charger manufacturers recommend surge protection, and some surge devices carry a connected-equipment warranty that pays for damage if the device fails.
