New LED recessed lights where the room needs them, or the old cans you have converted to LED. Even light, no dark corners, on a dimmer.
Next Phase Electric installs recessed lighting in homes across South King and Pierce County. For new lights we use slim canless LED fixtures that fit under joists and ducts, lay them out to the room before cutting, and wire them to a dimmer. For existing can lights, an LED retrofit takes a few minutes per light and needs no new wiring. A typical room of six lights with attic access above takes half a day. New recessed lighting is new wiring, so it gets a permit, which we pull.
New lights, or new life for the ones you have.
Slim LED fixtures cut into a finished ceiling, wired from the existing switch or a new one. Living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, basements.
A retrofit trim replaces the bulb and the yellowed ring in each existing can. Brighter, cooler, and it seals the hole in the ceiling.
Lights placed over the counter edges, not the walkway, so you are not working in your own shadow. Often paired with under-cabinet lights.
Wet-rated fixtures over a shower or under a covered porch, sealed against steam and weather.
The fixtures are inexpensive. The planning is what you are paying for.
We mark every light on the ceiling first and find the joists, ducts and pipes above. A hole in the wrong place is a patch; a mark in the wrong place is an eraser.
Under an attic, the fixture must be rated for contact with insulation and airtight, which the Washington energy code requires. The wrong one overheats or leaks warm air all winter.
LED recessed lights flicker or buzz on old dimmers. We fit a dimmer made for LEDs and set its low end so the lights fade smoothly.
Both end up looking the same from below.
| Canless LED | Can with LED trim | |
|---|---|---|
| Space above the ceiling | About an inch. Fits under joists and ducts. | Five to seven inches of clear space. |
| When the light fails | The whole slim fixture is swapped in a minute. | The trim or bulb is replaced; the can stays. |
| Best for | New lights in a finished ceiling, low attics, between floors. | Homes that already have cans in good condition. |
| Color and brightness | Usually switchable between warm and cool on the fixture. | Set by the trim or bulb you choose. |
Warm white (2700 to 3000 K) suits living spaces. We bring a sample so you can see it on your own ceiling.

Tell us the room, the ceiling height and whether there is an attic above. A photo of the ceiling helps. A technician reaches out within 1 business hour.
Light positions marked, obstacles found, switch and dimmer agreed. You get the exact price before any work.
Clean holes, fixtures in, dimmer set, dust sheets up, permit signed off.
Repairs: King and Pierce County south of I-90. Installations: greater Puget Sound.
It is priced per light and depends on the number of lights, whether there is attic access above, and whether a new switch is needed. Six lights in a room under an attic is the common job. You get the exact price before any work starts.
Converting existing cans to LED is quick and needs no wiring, so it is the least expensive lighting upgrade there is. Replacing cans that are damaged or the wrong type for the insulation takes longer. We count them and give you the exact price.
As a rule, space them about half the ceiling height apart: four feet on an eight-foot ceiling. A twelve by fourteen foot room usually takes six. Kitchens need more, placed over the counters.
Yes. Canless LED fixtures are fed from hole to hole through the ceiling, so a room between floors can be done with little or no patching. Joists running the wrong way sometimes mean one small access hole.
Only if they are rated for insulation contact and airtight. Older cans often are not, and insulation piled on them is a fire risk. We check the rating stamped inside the can and replace the ones that do not have it.
Converting existing cans to LED does not need one. Adding new recessed lights is new wiring and does. Washington L&I issues the electrical permit in most of our area; Burien, Des Moines, Federal Way and Renton issue their own, and Tacoma Power covers Tacoma. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
A few minutes per light for LED conversions. Half a day for six new lights under an attic. A kitchen or a room with no access above takes a full day.
