Nothing was on, and it tripped anyway. That rules out overload — and leaves the causes worth a visit.
Three causes cover almost every call we get for this.
A nail from a picture hook, a cable chewed by a rodent in the attic, a burnt connection in a box.
An outdoor outlet, a porch light or a crawl-space box with water in it. Trips when it rains.
Breakers that have tripped many times trip at nothing. Replaced in minutes with one listed for the panel.
Takes a minute, costs nothing, fixes it more often than you would think.
Push the breaker fully OFF then ON once. Note whether it trips immediately or after a delay — tell us when you book.
Still happening? That's our job.
Random trips on an empty circuit are the breaker catching something you cannot see.
Online or by phone. A technician reaches out within 1 business hour.
Traced to the box or device it lives in. Exact price before any work, you approve it first.
Right parts, tested under load, next connection checked so it does not come back.
A breaker that trips with nothing running cannot be an overload, which leaves a short or ground fault in the wiring or in something hard-wired on the circuit, moisture in an outdoor box or fixture, an arc-fault breaker reacting to a damaged cable, or a breaker that has simply worn out. Reset it once. If it trips again on an empty circuit, leave it off — it is reporting a fault, and we find it with the power off.
If the breaker is warm or the panel smells, today. Otherwise book this week — but do not keep resetting it.
Exact price after we find the cause, before any work starts.
Sometimes, but AFCIs also catch real arcing in damaged cables. We test the circuit before replacing the breaker.
