Outlets Dead After a Storm or Power Outage

Power came back and part of the house did not. Two resets to try, then it is a service or surge problem.

Why It Happens

What It Usually Is

Three causes cover almost every call we get for this.

GFCI or breaker tripped on restore

The surge when power returns trips protective devices. Reset once.

Surge damage

The restore moment is a surge. Appliances that "died in the outage" usually died when the power came back.

Lost leg or damaged service

A tree on the line, a loose utility connection, or a damaged mast leaves half the house dead and the rest at the wrong voltage.

Before You Call

Worth Trying First

Takes a minute, costs nothing, fixes it more often than you would think.

Press RESET on every GFCI and push each breaker fully OFF then ON.

Ask a neighbor whether everything came back for them. If not, call PSE.

Still happening? That's our job.

How It Works

What Happens When You Book

Half the house out, or lights brighter in one room than another after an outage, is a lost neutral or a lost leg — the fault that burns out every electronic in the house.

You Book

Online or by phone. A technician reaches out within 1 business hour.

We Find It

Traced to the box or device it lives in. Exact price before any work, you approve it first.

Fixed and Tested

Right parts, tested under load, next connection checked so it does not come back.

FAQ

Common Questions

When power returns after an outage and some outlets or appliances stay dead, it is usually a GFCI or breaker that tripped during the restore, a surge at the restore moment that killed electronics, or — if a whole floor or half the house is out — one of the two legs feeding your panel has not come back, which is a service problem. Reset GFCIs and breakers; if that does not do it, or if lights are dim or extra-bright, call before using anything sensitive.

Call us. We check the panel and the service on your side of the meter; if the fault is on the utility side we tell you, and you call PSE with the right information.

The mast, weatherhead and meter base on your house are yours. PSE will not reconnect until an electrician repairs them with a permit. We do that work.

Yes — a whole-house surge protector at the panel. Ask when you book.
